LED Reader Boards, Message Centers or Displays - How much do we understand about these Signs?
An LED Display Sign is comprised of a number of tiny diodes (the D from LED) that produce light in a variety of colors. For a monochrome sign (one color), these diodes display various shades or either red or amber. For a full color display, these diodes show either red, blue or green light. The combination of these diodes will produce additional colors depending on how strong they are shining. Groups of one or greater are called pixels. The more actual pixels that a display has will directly affect the quality of the image. A higher number of pixels will allow for smoother lines and greater detail.
Red/Green/Blue LEDs forming Pixels
The distance between each pixel is called the pitch. The pitch is calculated from the center of one pixel to the center of another. The smaller the pitch is, the closer the pixels are together and the greater the image quality.
Take this concept a bit further...Picture a dot that a pen could make on a piece of paper. Now picture an entire page filled with many neat lines and columns of dots. Now, try to draw an image such as a flower or a person using only these dots. With a smaller pitch, or smaller distance between the dots, you would have a much easier time of drawing a realistic picture. If however, your distance was much greater, between the dots, your picture would become somewhat jagged and less recognizable. Think about trying to enlarge a photo and seeing the individual dots when you go too large.
The Matrix represents the total number of pixels that the display front will hold. The matrix is expressed as length or rows X width or columns.
You may have seen the largest LED display in the USA while watching a game at Cowboy Stadium (home of the Dallas Cowboys) located in Arlington, TX. The sign has a pixel matrix of 1,088 by 2,432. This display looks more like an HD television than a sign, but just imagine how that is over 2 million pixels in one display!
Visitors to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 were able to glimpse one of the world's largest color LED sign (over 24,000 Square Feet) which was designed using solar power.
